I felt the need for a change from painting to drawing. I really enjoy working with coloured pencils and chose this Cheetah portrait. The unique texture and vibrancy of coloured pencils allow for a level of detail that is often hard to achieve with paint. This medium offers a range of tonal variation, which can beautifully capture the delicate spots and the sleek fur of the cheetah.
I like to create my portraits large enough that I can add real detail to the eyes of my subjects. In the case of the cheetah, the eyes are not only captivating but are also essential for conveying the spirit of the animal. Cheetahs have striking, expressive eyes that reflect their playful yet fierce nature. By enlarging the portrait, I can meticulously work on the eyes, ensuring that they draw the viewer in, creating an emotional connection. Adding layers of colour to the irises, blending oranges, yellows, and browns, will further enhance the realism of the cheetah’s gaze.
